My favorite vantage point in all of Walt Disney World

John Faurote and Jeff Noel at California Grill
John seemed pleasantly surprised by our early morning excursion to the “Top of The World”.

My favorite vantage point in all of Walt Disney World is on top of Disney’s Contemporary Resort.

This is saying something because i’ve had the privilege of being in some amazing Disney Vantage points, including the highest room in Cinderella Castle.

So it was very intentional to take John there to have him experience our first official commitment to engage in a one-day “Jeff Noel Community Program”.

Hoping he never forgets reading those words on that email, and never forgets believing all his hard work and trust in a positive outcome will pay off.

On April Fool’s Day 2009, jeff noel began writing five daily, differently-themed blogs (on five different sites). It was to be a 100-day self-imposed “writer’s bootcamp”, in preparation for writing his first book. He hasn’t missed a single day since.

We changed our questions at Disney, changing everything

We changed our questions at Disney, changing everything.

The first 15 years working at Disney, we asked questions similar to the ones Press Ganey is asking above.

Somewhere in the middle 1990’s we transformed our thinking as an organization.

We uncovered the four key drivers to Guest Satisfaction and made sure every Cast Member group (Front Desk, Waitress, Life Guard, Merchandise Host, Landscaper, etc) was rated on those four key drivers above everything else.

Four simple questions.

Every Cast Member group was held accountable for excellence in all four Key Drivers.

What if we “aced” lessor Guest Satisfaction Drivers, but failed at mission critical drivers?

Our repeat visitation – our number one business metric – would drop.

Simple as that.

Even a 1% drop would translate to millions (and millions) in lost revenue.

And even a 1% increase would have the opposite (and positive) affect.

PS. Go 5% in either direction. Go 10%.

Life is tough. Everyone is feeling the weight of the world on their shoulders. It’s the common thread for all humans.

Sent this last night, responding to request for advice…

“Thanks for your note and i do know your Grandfather and recall Cheryl going to lunch with you and your brother.

Judson, the greatest resource you have for the goals you describe is right under your nose. It’s your Disney leadership team. The one you had on your College Program and the one you have currently.

So here’s my best advice: Create great relationships with your leaders, their bosses (if possible, and it’s always possible), your peers, your Guests, vendors, everyone. Disney is famous for friendly, helpful, optimistic people. If that’s hard to do at the level you are at, it will be impossible to advance.

Every ring on the “leadership ladder” carries with it additional responsibilities that can bury people who aren’t equipped. So if this feels like hard work now, leadership might not be the right direction.

I’m assuming you were a standout at Cosmic Rays. Leverage those connections.

I retired almost two years ago and Cheryl’s position is in an exceptionally busy time right now.

Happy to answer any and all questions you have at any time.

Think of a mentor like a personal trainer. i can give advice from the expertise that comes from experience, yet i cannot do the exercises (the relationship building) for the trainee.

What books have you read about Disney? Send that list and i’ll recommend what’s missing and validate the great ones.

And if we aren’t connected on LinkedIn, please send an invitation.

Finally, expect an answer to any question within 24 hrs, usually same day, and often within hours. Future replies are not likely to be this long. 🙂

Be amazed and be amazing Judson. Our world needs more of that.

(PS, i didn’t proof this, sorry for grammar/typos)”

Working with Sports Organizations while at Disney Institute

Wrote this at the request of an inquisitive, ambitious, driven, creative, and self-driven individual.

Working with Sports Organizations while at Disney Institute, here are a few i remember personally working with, during 15 years of full-time speaking from 1999-2014:

  • Orlando Magic (Amway Arena), Brooklyn Nets (Barclays Center), Miami Heat (American Airlines Arena), Portland Trailblazers (Moda Center)
  • National Football League, NFL Super Bowls 47 (Superdome) & 48 (MetLife Stadium)
  • NACDA: National Association of College Athletic Directors (National Conference in Orlando)
  • USATF: United States of America Track & Field (Indianapolis annual meeting)
  • MLS: Major League Soccer (Owners meeting in Philly, Citizens Bank Park)

Most but not all followed this tier of separate training engagements:

  1. Executive Leadership
  2. Middle & Frontline Leadership
  3. Frontline Employees

Most organizations begin with Customer Service, and Disney Institute has a recipe that focuses on three fundamental components for every employee:

  1. A Service Theme (aka Common Purpose)
  2. Quality Service Standards (a prioritized decision-making matrix)
  3. Behavior Guidelines (tangible, observable, “friendly” behaviors)

Helpful notes:

  • With the exception of USATF and NACDA, all other sports organizations participated in Leadership Excellence training for their executive teams.
  • All NBA teams i worked with also rolled out a second wave of training for every leader in their organization, which also had the Executives attending to demonstrate commitment.
  • A third layer of training completed the initial “Service Excellence” rollout which involved every front line employee, including part-time workers.
  • After the three-tiered rollout, additional assessments where made, driven by the individual organization’s economics and overall vision. The Orlando Magic demonstrated the most ongoing commitment. They also had the best customer service improvements.
