People as teachers

President Biden
Early in the Russian invasion of Ukraine.

People as teachers.

Spouse, family, friends, colleagues, businesses, neighbors.

Everything has a teachable moment in it.

Just like the beauty of nature or the Grace of God – it’s ever present. Never-ending.

People teach us by what they do and don’t do.

What people say is false teaching.

Why?

Because…words don’t teach, what you do teaches.

What you do thunders so loudly, i cannot hear what you say.

We judge ourselves on our intentions, others judge us on our behaviors.

dad

You cannot talk your way out of a situation you acting yourself into.

Context: Behaviors must be witnessed. You cannot truthfully judge on behaviors from a story you are told, only from a story you witness. You must be a first-hand witness. We forget this.

Additional context: Writing from the heart, for our Son’s benefit, from my personal witness journey. Publicly and daily without missing a single day, since 2009.

Shit my dad did

Father and son at beach sunset
Sanibel Island every year of your life, so far.

Shit my dad did (high-level highlights):

Wrote me a book as a “Life Guide” in case something bad ever happens to him and he’s not around to answer my questions.

Wrote me five daily, differently-themed blog posts, as a real life, real time life guide.

Recorded for me a 100-episode podcast (If Disney Ran Your Life) about personal vibrancy.

Took me and my mom to Sanibel every year of my life. At 13, we started going every Summer to Glacier.

Demonstrated how to have personal vibrancy in all five of life’s most important choices: mind, body, spirit, work, home. These five are the same topics in the book, the blogs, and the podcast.

(Still in my Son’s voice) The list is literally endless, but I’ll end on this one…from the time I was three years old until I graduated High School, my dad insisted on an habitual at-school, after-school (at pick-up time) bear hug. Never missed a day. There was no bus and I didn’t have a car.

But you do it

Leaders, when your direct reports are doing things that you wish they didn’t do, have they learned it from you?

Focus on your stories

Steve Jobs quote
Every leader is telling a story about what he or she values, through their behaviors.

Focus on your stories.

Why?

It is the easiest and best way to communicate concepts and how they work.

Concepts and how they work is the essence of leadership.

Teaching a child how to become an adult.

Teaching an employee how to serve your customers.

Same difference.

Personal responsibility, joy, contribution, and growth.

Note: Everyday preach the Gospel, if necessary, use words.

Sounds fishy

Glacier National Park from continental divide
Continental Divide and a remnant of an ancient ocean bottom, at 7,000′ elevation.

Give a person a fish, you feed them today.

Teach someone to fish, you feed them forever.

In my experience, few (i used to be one of them) want to do the hard, consistent and constant work to live a balanced life.

For starters, balance is a myth has always been the prevailing and perverse societal belief.

Also for starters, balance is not a myth must crush the old paradigm.

The best fisher-people are those who believe everything is their responsibility.

Learn to masterfully feed yourself.

Then teach others, so they may pay it forward.
