Hung up the phone a few hours ago with a business contact and am reflecting on how challenging it was to communicate the idea of living with a 10-year plan including “retiring” at age 55 from this fortune 500 entertainment company.
Why do businesses create five and 10 year plans? Simple. Because it helps them plan for the future and focus what they need to do today to reach their goals. Crazy? What’s crazy is most individuals don’t focus like this.

Sure, three years ago, at 50, I made a 10-year plan. Most businesses forecast 5-10 years out, because it’s an incredibly smart business practice. Why would I look at my personal life any differently? Really, why?
So I don’t look at my personal life any differently. Run your life like a business? Why not? In 2009, at 50, my original 10 year plan was five more years as a Disney professional speaker, and then five years on my own, challenging Baby Boomers to “do something great before they die”.
