Two or too different?

Early evening hike start. Someone offered to take our photo. i usually decline all offers. Such a stock photo.

Same sign, same people, different photographer. Change what you see and what you see changes.

Things take longer and are harder than we believe at every important journey’s beginning.

You hand over your camera and they take the photo they think you want.

Then you get your camera back and take the photo you really want.

Two different photos entirely.

Too different?

One way ticket

Mountains
Continental Divide is unassuming. The foreground stalks are expired Beargrass.

Covid in 2020 added a new dimension to visiting Glacier.

The dimension has morphed into a yearly habit.

Since Summer 2020, i only book a one-way ticket.

This is the fourth Summer doing this.

2023 will be fifth consecutive Summer staying 50 or more days.

One Summer, i made five trips. Other Summers generally two or three trips. The Covid Summer was one 50-consecutive days trip; it was intended to be a simple (and quick) two-week solo trip.

Not a creature was stirring

10-second video: Not an animal, nor human, in sight. Everything in this video is so massive that it’s challenging to appreciate the magnificence of the Continental Divide’s Eastern view.

Today’s posts are inspired by a cluster of videos on the Mac desktop screen. Before clearing the desktop images, decided to use them today.

Yes, let’s push ourselves

Shoes: i wear New Balance running shoes. Never lace them up. Often wear a second sock layer.

Wifi: Literally no wifi in GNP. Some Lodges have elementary access wifi.

Cell signal: ATT on West side. Verizon on East side. No cell in Park, unless you discover a few rare places where cell comes in.

Traffic: Traffic gets congested soon after sunrise. It clears by 4:00 PM at Logan Pass.

Ticketed entry: Ticketed Entry is in place due to Covid. Without a ticketed entry pass, you can get in before 6:00 AM or after 3:00 PM.

Confirmations on all of the above: Have digital access to every confirmation. And screen shots. You probably won’t have internet at the entrances.

Arrival Day: pre-send some stuff (if you want to carry less on plane) via USPS (Babb post office is best for East side…West Glacier is best for West side), timing, car, grocery, route, check-in, stops, dinner, sunset.

All days: Breakfast, cabin departure, trail selection, trailhead arrival, lunch, hike duration, daypack essentials, safety, hike breaks, hiking etiquette, hike duration, dinner options, sunset options, review next day agenda.

Going to work at Glacier

mountains with a couple small Disney toy figurines in foreground
Easy to write from anywhere in Glacier. Even here.

There are a few people i’d love to see in Glacier that still have to balance an ability to work from anywhere. Meaning they aren’t yet retired.

That’s why wifi and cell signal realities need to be easily understood.

Glacier is a big place and the reality is your work routine needs to creatively pivot in a way you’ve never done before.

This pivoting every Summer, and the creative tweaks from continuous improvement allow for a workable system that still surprises me.
