Leadership And Birthday Presents

So Simple, Even A 10-Year Old...
So Simple, Even A 10-Year Old...

Excellent Leadership requires a few basic fundamentals:

  • A clear, concise and compelling vision
  • A balanced approach
  • Simple, key, repeatable messages
  • Crystal clear expectations
  • Accountability
  • Continuous improvement
  • Fun

Last night we gave our son “his best birthday present ever”.

He said, “In your hand or in your pocket”.

Cheryl said, “Where did you learn that?”

“From the best”, he said.

Long before yesterday, I’ve been preaching, “In your hand or in your pocket”.

You lose an iPhone, and you become very unhappy, very fast.

You dilute or lose your leadership vision and, well, you get the picture.

The Sky Is Falling

It's An Emergency...
It's An Emergency...

You’ve heard this phrase and can picture someone running around in a panic, “The sky is falling, the sky is falling!”

It is falling and like yesterday’s post stated, there are many complaining, whiny people reminding us daily.

Gets old doesn’t it?

The antidote? You know I have one.

What I want to know is, do you?

You Don’t Know Tweet!

1 2 3 4 - That'll Never Happen Again :)
1 2 3 4 - That'll Never Happen Again 🙂

So many business professionals think they know Twitter. They think you Tweet something and the world sees it.

Yeah right. Rubbish.

How do I know? Because I know more about social media than most people.

And there are quite a few who make me look like a beginner. They are years ahead of me, and you.

Social media will not work for you unless you are patiently and consistently using it yourself to promote your own message, and can see your own metrics, to understand what works and what doesn’t.

Are You An Investor?

Hmmmm.....
Hmmmm.....

Yesterday, a buddy from Church, and a fellow Cub Scout Dad sent me an email with this advertisement for a professional development opportunity here in Orlando, later this Fall.

When you do the right things for the right reasons, eventually, you begin to see dividends, but only if you don’t give up and if you never tire of the basics.

Continually learning, through books, seminars, blogs, university, volunteering, will pay dividends, but only if you consider yourself an investor.

Four Things

Guard Against Boring Teachers
Guard Against Boring Teachers

Who doesn’t like to learn new, cool, helpful stuff?

Do you have to, or get to, teach others?  You know, teaching other adults, co-workers, children, parents, your boss, etc.

You most likely never think of how effective you are when you teach. So here’s a test.

When a great teacher teaches you, they are aiming for four criteria, to be effective.  Bob Pike, the Walt Disney of Training, developed four questions. “Did you?”:

  1. Like it
  2. Learn it
  3. Use it
  4. Make a difference

Then Don Kirkpatrick comes along and adds to this with his four.  “Was there?”

  1. Reaction
  2. Learning
  3. Behavior
  4. Results

No matter how you slice it as a leader, the more you know and the simpler you keep it, well, you decide.
