Some leadership blog posts are driven by purposeful events. Like yesterday concluding an amazing five-day workshop for 120 at Walt Disney World’s Contemporary Resort, participants saying things like:

  • This was flippin’ amazing!
  • Phenomenal!
  • Life-changing!

But tomorrow’s post is driven by an email response to some speaking attributes of a captivating and influential speaker a Mid Life Celebration tribe member saw.

I recognize the room formation. Brings back great memories. It actually WAS flippin’ amazing.

So do I Donna! Following this exercise, we were done for the night. It was during the first night of Disney’s Approach to Leadership Excellence. I went back to my room thinking “I’m not ready for this. Am I really qualified to be a leader of this magnitude?”

By the end of the course, I was well equipped to become a leader. It wasn’t an overnight transformation. It was more of an awakening, showing me the potential that lies within each of us.

BTW, I picked Goofy. Irony? I don’t think so. πŸ™‚

David, wow, no idea you carried that level of apprehension. Being so close it’s hard to understand why.

And, SO glad you left as a man ready and motivated to be transformed, with tools and everything. πŸ™‚

Jeff,

Going in, I wasn’t apprehensive. Meeting you and Mary in the line for dinner aided the transition in a (not-so) foreign place with (almost) total strangers. The excitement of being there was enough to override any anxiety.

Then there was the exercise. It showed me that although I had a fair amount of knowledge about Disney, I didn’t have a great level of knowledge about leadership and what it really took to be an effective leader.

Three days later I was ready to take on the world. Now I can’t wait to get back. πŸ™‚
