A shared vision

performing a traceroute
Two nights ago, and an hour on the GoDaddy Tech support line, we did a Traceroute – IP Address related -and yesterday life in WordPress is back to normal. The web speed in WordPress felt like what a compound fracture must feel like in the wilderness.

A simple question, “What’s our vision?”, has the power to transform people, a department, an organization, an industry, the world.

What’s my vision with this Executive client?

A shared vision:

We work together to make our world a better place.

We work together in a rare, glorious, remarkable way that inspires great ideas and great people to do work that accomplishes great things, impossible things.

None of this will fly, however, if i want it more than you do.

The simple question is this, “Do you want it more than i do?”

Now what?

Apple gives you 14 days to pickup at the store. Note the additional information about Black Friday and Cyber Monday weekend (11.29-12.02). Managing expectations for what is predicable.

Now what?

Saw it coming but hoped i was wrong.

So then, now what?

Price goes up.

Is that fair?

Technically, yes.

Will you hold your ground or be flexible?

Herein lies the challenge.

Expectations are formed by our actions, not by what we say.

If i say there’s a deadline but don’t enforce it, then there really wasn’t a deadline.

This lack of honoring one expectation contaminates all expectations.

What shouldn’t be a tough call might be, meaning the tough call to raise the price to the December 25th deadline price.

Why?

Anyone paying a premium expects flexibility. As in, “cut me a break, man”.

And then there’s the notion that all of this was an exercise in negotiating a bigger picture – contract(s) signed by year end, which is four weeks away.

Leadership accountability works best with perfect clarity

Mickey and Minnie Mouse on Parade float
What the public focuses on – the 3-O’clock Parade.

Disney World peak attendance
What the organization focuses on – how to keep the Magic alive after the Parade is over.

What the Senior Executive saw as being rigid and inflexible, i saw as clarity.

Funny how the same thing can be seen paradoxically opposed.

One of the four world-class leadership basics is accountability.

Accountability works best with perfect clarity.

Less than perfect clarity brings less than perfect results.

Either way, a culture is established and practiced daily based on the way expectations are determined, communicated, and enforced.

The harsh reality for people who dislike demanding bosses

Disneyland book
Walt Disney had his moments like every leader does. He wasn’t always happy with the way things were going.

There’s a harsh reality for people who dislike demanding bosses. The demanding boss doesn’t like being demanding. If accountability is clear, then results should follow. When results don’t follow the boss has to do something to ensure the results happen.

That plan b that the boss has to go to is often perceived as demanding.

Now imagine if you delivered exactly what you and the boss agreed on.

There’d be praise instead of pressure.

Tell me again who’s fault that is.

Accountability, Disney-style

car accident
Driving home from the gym yesterday afternoon.

Car accident
Clear expectations: always drive the speed limit, never (ever) tailgate, no texting while driving, on time is 10 minutes early – never speed to make up for being late. Clarity. Agreement.

Accountability, Disney-style…

This is about two simple yet overlooked ideas:

  • Clarity
  • Agreement

At Disney, the clearer a leader is about what’s expected, the better the end results. Gaining agreement means there’s no misunderstanding. Misunderstanding are rampant, insidious, and cause tremendous damage – to culture, morale, financial results, customer satisfaction, productivity, etc.

Clarity and agreement also includes consequences and repercussions from dishonoring the agreement.
