Yesterday received this update. Wayne and i worked together. He does not have 47 years – just a simple typo. Nicole (another colleague) moved from Engagement Manager (Consultant) to Sales Manager – moves like this generally involve less travel.

Six Big Horn sheep descended from their high-altitude base camp. We sat at the parking lot’s edge, hoping they’d cross close by. It was fun to watch the motorists try to sneak a five-second view as they drove by.

The second-hand benefit from an early arrival and a parking space is that we watched the Big Horn Sheep for 15 minutes.

The opportunity of unpredictability.

Assume you are in less than decent health. Assume you’re in a physical state that had you concerned enough to, for the first time in your life, commit in your spirit to take life-preserving action.

Assuming this is you, and you went to a reputable gym, which of these identically priced offers would seem best, and why?

  • Buy a package allowing three visits per week with a personal trainer, which would be with any one of the many qualified personal trainers (decent variety)
  • Buy a package allowing three visits per week with a specifically assigned personal trainer

Assume that all trainers are professional and that their skills and abilities, while covering all the wellness fundamentals, vary based on their years in the business, education, personal experiences, previous clientele – both quantity and quality, their drive to tell you everything – even the stuff others wouldn’t want to confront you with, and based on their vision and commitment to your personal goals.

Which would you pick and why?

Now, switch that thinking to organizational culture health.

Cheryl comes home from work. She unloads her work stuff from the van and then we head out for a 5:45pm Brown Derby reservation. The Magic began as soon as we arrived. Can’t share the Disney secrets except to say that we feel exceptionally lucky to get to do what we get to do. Magic also happens “backstage”.

Things you never thought would happen in your life…

Worked remotely from Disney University (DU) yesterday morning. Due to rain, i delayed the run to Magic Kingdom until well after sunrise. This caused the timing of a 9am client call to fall 1/3 of the way into a nine-mile run. No big deal.

DU was the perfect place to balance the wonderful flexibility being an entrepreneur provides.

The investment of $1,000 per month for 75 months before the first revenue was generated seemed unreasonable. And that first speaking engagement was never guaranteed. But what has happened in the nine months since literally makes me tear up.

Was coaching a Navy Veteran yesterday who’s goal is to transition into a leadership role at Disney when he retires. He is about to enroll in an MBA program to further his credentials.

i held my tongue, and was reminded of my choice in 2008 to start an LLC.

All around me were ambitious Disney Institute colleagues who were enrolling in MBA programs to bolster their odds for a promotion. Better title equals better pay, right?

i could see the writing on the wall – MBA’s provide a false sense of finally finding the missing link to what is holding you back. Literally everyone who received their MBA is still in the same position.

i always felt the real MBA, and income progression, could be found in actually being a master of your own business administration. Start your own business, make it work, then grow and prosper exponentially.

You know, the essence of my first book, Mid Life Celebration: rethink • reprioritize • recommit is that we have two choices: follow the herd or follow our heart
