C S Coach

Upper right: the dam and lake from last blog. Searched Google for Southwest USA dams. Can’t find a match.

C S Coach.

Not C S Lewis.

C S Coach.

Can’t share why publicly.

Probably go to hell for the sarcasm.

But, next time you see me….

This concludes today’s fun riff capturing the newest ‘book titles’. Prior to today, Judas stood alone. Feels therapeutic to add three new ‘titles’ – Ms. Treeted, Dr. Unk, and C S Coach.

Convincing yourself?

Looking across 8 lanes of I-4 to the Disney Casting Center.

Convincing yourself?

Not really.

Convincing others?

Double nope.

i may be your one true hope for a coach who will help you see clearly what you do (blindspots), and what you think no one else notices (yet they see it clearly). i can help you get better at what you’re already good at, which is your habits.

My expertise and the thing that changed everything for me, is asking better questions more often. Questions that people either never ask, or questions that make people put their head down and hope the teacher doesn’t call on them.

In parenting circles it’s called tough love.

You’re great at habits.

Create better habits – get better results.

It’s that simple.

Balancing humility with strength is challenging

Disney Keynote Speaker jeff noel
Most executives are easily distracted by bright, shiny things.

Dear Company Executive,

Do you trust your gut?

Me too.

May i remind you…

Recently, you received the gift of gut reactions from the only person (me) that confronted you when none of your inner-circle did, even though they had ample opportunities. And i did it quickly, after a single encounter with you.

So you know first hand how incredibly powerful my gut (and courage for confrontation) is.

First, here are the key snippets from a sterotypical Executive Coach’s website:

  1. “I have also earned the Master Certified Coach (MCC) designation from the International Coaching Federation.”
  2. “Less than 5% of all professional coaches worldwide hold this designation.”
  3. “The primary significance of this for my leaders is that a) I have done a ton of coaching, and b) I have been judged by my peers as meeting the highest standards of the coaching profession.”

Now, i’m gonna dissect my gut reactions based on the three points above.

Sentence 1:  Sounds impressive, and she needs to sound impressive. She’s sunk if she can’t sound impressive. Period.

Sentence 2:  The wow-factor, top of her industry. This was a purchased opportunity, like an MBA or a PhD. She needs the wow factor.

Sentence 3:  Like “going-the-extra-mile” is a flawed proposition, this sentence reveals something inexperienced CEO’s will never know. Disney has a standard of excellence that no one can comprehend, except those who spent a lifetime there…that’s 30 years for me, my Executive friend. i’ve literally seen it all, at every level. From Michael Eisner and Frank Wells to brand new Custodial Hosts and Hostesses (janitors).

Are the best leaders also the best parents?

Personal values list
Our instructor, a seasoned attorney, carries a $100 bill and tells people when riding elevators he’ll give it to them if they can share their personal values before the door opens. He’s never given away the $100. He would have yesterday if he had tested the audience.

Empathy is often regarded as one of the top leadership qualities differentiating great leaders from good leaders.

And there’s talk about some adults being too busy to be effective parents, that is, too busy to generously demonstrate empathy.

This is why i insist great leaders differentiate themselves with:

  1. clear, concise, compelling vision
  2. enhancing employee involvement by moving past training, to development, to foster commitment (versus compliance)
  3. putting structure and process in place to have absolute clarity on accountability for priorities and balance
  4. demonstrating the most commitment on your team, and if there was a private vote, you’d be unanimously selected

Makes perfect sense.

PS. The 5 personal values i’ve been teaching our son since he could talk:

  1. Honesty
  2. Behave admirably
  3. Personal Responsibility
  4. Self-control
  5. Initiative

We worked on honesty (trust) from day one. Behaving admirably was introduced with the advent of sleepovers. Personal responsibility added during elementary school. Self-control added during adolescence. And initiative was added last year as a High Schooler. Next up is fun – probably add that tonight.

On April Fool’s Day 2009, jeff noel began writing five daily, differently-themed blogs (on five different sites). It was to be a 100-day self-imposed “writer’s bootcamp”, in preparation for writing his first book. He hasn’t missed a single day since.

Sorry, that was arrogant wasn’t it?

We see what we want to see.

It is quiet, secure confidence.

You want to be on a stage and light a room of 600 on fire, you better damn well have confidence pouring out your veins.

PS. Note…that is what positive self-talk looks like. i never say stuff like that publicly. Every once in awhile, though, i write it here in the (faint) hope that if something bad ever happens to me, our son will have a chance to discover some of this.
