It’s weird writing at the end of the day

Disney customer service keynote, speaker
One of my favorite photos of Mickey Mouse because it’s blurry, snd because of the off-site client.

It’s weird writing at the end of the day. Not writing in the morning made me feel off kilter. Morning writing is a personal commitment.

Personal commitments either mean something or they don’t.

And personal integrity – doing what we say we’re going to do – is the key to being a workplace leader.

We know this.

The first victory is over self.

Working hard to not work so hard

The Disney Way keynote speaker
Lower right box represents our (job) contribution to society, for which society pays us money.

Working hard to not work so hard. i cannot recall the last time i didn’t work seven days a week. It may have been 1998, the year before i joined Disney Institute. When i became a “teacher’ of the Disney Way to executives and staff at the world’s most admired companies, something inexplicable happened.

i discovered that i was born to teach.

And learning how to become a great teacher has never felt like work.

Are good leaders a waste of our money?

Orlando Speakers Bureau

(photo: Most leaders think it’s a good idea to have an open door policy. Food for thought – don’t spend too much time in your office.)

Being a great leader is elusive.

Being a good one, not so much.

Good leaders suck.

Ouch.

But it’s true.

Good leaders don’t inspire their people to be amazing all day, everyday.

The challenge with being a great leader is carving out time.

It takes time to get to the truth.

And it takes the truth to be a great leader.

Not taking the time and not knowing the truth are the same thing.

Truth facilitates inspiration.

A leader’s real job is inspiration.

You can’t inspire if you’re not involved with the front line. Involved enough to find out what brings your employees joy.

Joy is the key.

But we don’t focus on joy.

It’s not on our leadership radar.

Employees aren’t keyed into joy either.

They’re focused on pleasure:

  • When’s my next break?
  • Will this customer be a jerk?
  • Hope I get that desk job.

Versus joy:

  • How do I make this customer’s day?
  • I can’t believe they pay me to do this.
  • I have the most amazing leaders.

It’s the difference between compliance versus commitment.

Resolve equals fail, commit equals succeed

Orlando Based Disney Consultants

The difference between resolving to do something versus committing to do something is the difference between failing and succeeding.

Enterprise-wide or even simply departmental customer service resolutions never work for the same reasons New Year’s resolutions don’t work.

Making an official declaration of change out of desperation or exasperation never works.

Only deep emotional desire (commitment) to never return to where we are will ensure our efforts never tire, our eyes transfixed on the future.
