Dear Son

You are responsible for everything as an entrepreneur

ATT chat log
After 90 minutes (and four different agents) on the phone with ATT, we resolved two account issues. Five minutes later, i needed to invest another 30 minutes to fix a third issue – my plan changed without my consent or knowledge. Two hours i hadn’t planned on spending.

You are responsible for everything as an entrepreneur.

Not saying this to discourage you.

Saying it to enlighten you.

Know in advance there will be a steady stream of things requiring your attention.

Some of them are predictable.

Others are not – see photo notes above.

Master simplicity or the “busy-ness” will overwhelm you.

A good feeling is one of the best unscientific measurements

Disney Keynote Speakers
If you could but didn’t, “Why not?” Pictured above are my Masters and PhD “diplomas”.

i’m working from anywhere these days.

It’s a good feeling to be able to do this.

The good feeling is one of the best measurements to ensure you are changing in beneficial ways.

The check’s in the mail

The check’s in the mail.

Or is it.

Patience is a virtue.

So is clear accountability.

If the shoe was on the other foot, would i be catching the wrath of an upset client?

Forgiveness is a virtue too.

Let’s see how this shakes out tomorrow.

Invest time in earning repetitive attention or loyal business?

Best LinkedIn profile summary
Arguably the best LinkedIn profile summary i’ve ever seen, from yesterday.

Invest time in earning repetitive attention or loyal business?

Repetitive attention usually is from potential customers seeking “free”.

Loyal customers purchase from you and will purchase from you again, if you offer something remarkable in exchange for their money.

Yes, there’s a body of evidence saying you should give away your best stuff for free – to expose people to your work.

May i suggest inside-the-box-thinking is the key to understanding a compelling reason to .think .differently

i recently asked someone who touts listening to podcasts and believes i’m making a mistake by not having one.

So i asked him, “How much money have you spent on your favorite podcaster’s products?”

“None.”

i rest my case.

In real life, inspiring, aspirational theory can eat you alive

Executive coaching
Executives live in a prison cell if they’re not careful – the fear of being wrong.

Much of the allure of great thinkers (say, Steve Jobs) is the spin the marketing and public relations people put on what the public gets to consume.

Yes, we know these people are or were ridiculously driven, yet we selectively push that aside because driven people are often exceptionally difficult to be around.

This my friends, is one of the proverbial crosses a visionary entrepreneur must carry.

It’s also the reason why so many people fall in love with the “text book theory” narrative.

Theory is so inspiring, especially from a distance.

In real life, inspiring, aspirational theory can eat you alive.

i love knowing this first hand.
