Brevity, simplicity, focus

Brevity, simplicity, focus.

In two and one half days, i’ll be leading a one-hour meeting with five others who have agreed to be part of a small team.

Nervous?

Yes.

Why?

Because this wasn’t part of my original vision.

Preaching brevity, simplicity, and focus is one thing.

Doing it is entirely different.

On April Fool’s Day 2009, jeff noel began writing five daily, differently-themed blogs (on five different sites). It was to be a 100-day self-imposed “writer’s bootcamp”, in preparation for writing his first book. He hasn’t missed a single day since.

Simplicity keeps coming up as a brand differentiator

One way i “write down” new passwords.

Told Gary that i use photos to capture notes. He then shared how photos are disrupting the way we do many things – finding new ways to use photos in ways we never used photos before.

And driving home I thought to myself i’d like to disrupt the way people think about leadership, employee culture, customer service, brand loyalty, and creativity & innovation.

To be able to explain how to do it with only three or four critical components.… that’s what’s missing… simplicity…people have too much to remember that they get so caught up in remembering that they don’t have great energy to execute.

But what if they didn’t have to work hard to remember things because it was so easy (to remember) and they could spend all their energy executing their plans?

i can’t afford it

Yesterday’s setup was easy, and an Apple employee was there holding my hand.

There was a glitch at the beginning, but Jaime walked me through it.

There are many excuses reasons excuses why your dream has stalled. Here’s a classic:

i can’t afford it

She can’t afford to hire a marketing person. Not many startup entrepreneurs can.

And i simply cannot afford to be someone else’s (random/last ditch) pitch person. When we can’t afford it because we don’t have the money is no different than when we can’t afford it because we don’t have the time.

And i don’t have the time because getting to the same emotional place as the creator doesn’t have a chance if i wouldn’t die for her idea.

Her’s is a really clever idea, but not worth dying for.

Are we aware of our question’s focus?

What do i need to know today is a good question.

But it doesn’t become a great question until we add a prioritized context.

Most of us skip this step because of the increased degree of difficulty in thinking through the bigger picture beyond today’s to-do list.

(photo: The secret? It’s just two things.)

Focus and discipline are the two main ingredients for creating Magic.

Focus on the basics.

Discipline yourself to never get bored with the basics.

That’s it.

It ain’t complicated.

But it does require world class determination.
