Know thy purpose

Speaking of a ticking clock…Yesterday, November 8, at Lowes Home Improvement store. Corporate goals mostly revolve around profit, not purpose.

Know thy purpose.

To thine own self be true.

But what about societal and family pressure to fit in and not rock the boat?

Is what you are doing good, decent, and doesn’t cause anyone to do anything against their will?

Then you are a free person.

Tradition has its place. We must never forget that tradition evolves. Tradition has always evolved. We forget this. You, my friend, may be modifying tradition in a way that makes more sense than older or existing traditions.

Making things better is a great tradition to carry on.

Setbacks should be expected

Embrace personal struggles and opportunities, it’s how we learn and grow.

Setbacks should be expected.

Like the recent meeting about a giant business move forward.

Two days ago, the meeting was cancelled hours before it was to start.

Why this is stressful is because the project is already painfully behind.

The cancelled meeting makes it worse.

Like the college freshman, being able to confront the bad things – my fear and doubt – is significant personal growth.

We can become overconfident to the point of a blind spot.

What?

Our success rate with confidence, and plowing through fear and doubt, may just have a cancerous growth we can’t detect until it can not be ignored.

All of a sudden, we are faced with a business challenge that shouldn’t exist and now it’s so big that it drags the rest of the business down.

First order of every day

A High School full of bright minds. Never allow common sense to be anything less than common practice.

First order of every day?

Make your bed.

It’s your bed and your responsibility.

It takes less than a minute (less than 30 seconds if you want to get technical).

Share one legitimate reason for not doing this every single morning.

Exactly.

There is no legitimate reason.

There are people who will never live in a home with electricity, clean running water, indoor toilets, refrigerated food and showers, let alone a nice, cozy, comfy bed.

Son, you’re the CEO of You, Inc.

Never go to class with an unmade bed.

Please think deeply about not exercising

Mark and i worked together at Disney’s Grand Floridian and Spa as well as Disney Institute, probably 20 years total.

Please think deeply about not exercising.

Totally agree with Mark.

Yes and, there are many leaders who do not exercise regularly, do not eat well-balanced nutrition, nor do they insist on adequate sleep.

If they are not trusting themselves to get and stay healthy, why would we trust them with stuff at work?

When experts talk, listen to the entire message. Cues and clues are everywhere.

Son, you have developed a keen sense of awareness in reading people. Trust your gut.

Sometimes your gut will be wrong. This is rare. Play the odds that your gut is your best defense and offense.

PS. Walt was an amazing visionary leader. He also died from lung cancer. Rumor is that the Disney point came from photoshopped photos of Walt’s cigarettes being removed, leaving behind two fingers as if in a point.

PSS. In the 1980’s at Disney’s Contemporary Resort lobby Concierge Desk, i made change for a $20 bill for Roy E. Disney. In that brief encounter i saw how Roy’s fingers were permanently stained from smoking. His fingers…that’s a lot of smoking.

There’s a time and a place to give up

quitting
Sad, but true. Do want you want to do with your life. It’s your life. Balance is a moving target.

There’s a time and a place to give up.

You can only learn this by experimenting with your judgment – this is your personal leadership responsibility.

Often, the test results from your experimenting won’t be available for months, years, even decades.

For example, giving up on staying active, eating and resting well, and staying motivated and having fun won’t generally reveal what a mistake that was until decades later.
