Ever ask a nine-year old for business advice?  I did recently.

Pondering the pros and cons of going solo versus partnering, on a special project.  So, just for kicks, I asked my son (9).

He said, “Two heads are better than one”.

For the next few minutes, my son and I waited for our friend to arrive.

The correct answer in hand, we had a great meeting.

Our Similarities Are Different

MBA – If you have one, are getting one, or plan to in the future, an MBA carries a certain clout.

People seek clout for a variety of reasons.  Mostly, it would seem, to advance their career and their paycheck.

In a competitive world, key advantages make for good strategy.  But because everyone knows an MBA increases one’s chances over one without an MBA, you’d think more people would actually get an MBA.

So why don’t they?  Not sure.  In fact, it’s really inconsequential.

The MBA I’m pursuing is for the same reasons, but the approach I’m taking is a completely different strategy than anyone else I know.

Seems our similarities are different.

How Important Is Money To You?

Money.  Can’t live with it, can’t live without it.  Money has always been my biggest stressor.

Eventually, I learned a very simple and very profound rule.  It is the first rule that should be learned.

  • Spend less than you earn

What made this most basic of rules so elusive for me, is that I did not subscribe to common sense.  A million reasons for that, which I’ll not even attempt to address.

The second rule I learned is have a business.  After reading “Rich Dad Poor Dad” last Christmas, my whole mindset about money was changed forever….

While it was never a childhood dream to be a professional speaker, there is no other profession I have more passion around.

As our young son grows and dreams big dreams, it’s my role (and my wife’s), to teach him how to live on purpose and with purpose.

Business leader’s have that same responsibility.   In fact every leader, in every organization does.

On purpose.   With purpose.

Are you crystal clear on where you are headed?  Better yet, would your team say you are?

Today’s program begins with key leadership deliverables.  And it starts with your vision.

Do you believe in your vision?  Are you willing to do whatever it takes? Are others compelled to follow you? Are they inspired by it?  Will they do whatever it takes?

Do you communicate your vision constantly?  Passionately?  With purpose? On purpose?

I know an eight year old who would answer yes to all of the above. Eight. Ya with me?  Eight.

Gain Knowledge in Amazing Places

Knowledge. Wow!  Some say, Knowledge is power.  Ever heard that phrase?

Next question, “Do you believe it’s true”?

I do, mostly.  However, just knowing is not enough for me.

And by the way, you can gain knowledge at parties, the Internet, and simply through experience.

Way more important though, is applying the knowledge.  Ya with me?

On July 4th, at a friends party, I spoke with a retired small business owner.   What got us talking was my question, “Do you run”? He certainly didn’t look 65 to me.  Not even close.

Anyway, I got some great small business tips from him:

  1. Number one, most important – be passionate about what you do
  2. Build long-term relationships;  never burn any bridges
  3. Deliver POS – Positively Outrageous Service

I asked another question, “I’ve heard that you either run your business or it runs you.  What do think of that”?

This led to a final, and critical message –Be prepared to work your life around your business.

In my 35 years paying taxes, I’ve worked in organizations where the leader said, “Run it like it’s your own business”. Heck, I used to try to inspire my direct reports with the exact same message.

It sure looks good on paper doesn’t it?  “Run it like it’s yours”. Until I did the math.

Searching the Internet for validation, I found various studies conclude anywhere from 50% to 80% of start-up businesses disappear within five years, with the majority within two years.

I paused.  Reflected on the significance.  And then acted on this knowledge in a dramatically different way than ever before, 18 months ago.

And to my surprise and delight, it’s made me a significantly better professional speaker.
