Quite possibly the last time ever

Grinnell Glacier Overlook Hike
The Sun is finally hitting the Big Horn Ram (center) Howard spotted on our way up.

Grinnell Glacier Overlook Hike
Smoke from the Sprauge fire is creeping up the valley towards Logan Pass.

It’s quickly making its way to Logan Pass.

Check out time at Granite is 10am. We told Margaret we’d be a little late. It took us three hours round trip, including nearly an hour at the overlook.

Love it.

Grinnell Glacier Overlook Hike
Packed up and time to hike four miles down to The Loop to catch the Glacier National Park free shuttle.

One last look towards Logan pass (where our car awaits) from our balcony.

Eventually, we saw The Loop, but from here we still had over two miles to hike.

The Loop Hike descent, literally no shade the last two miles, due to a fire years ago.

Believe it or not, some people completely underestimate how much water to carry.

The bottom trail (Goat Haunt) takes you to Canada. i’d like to try it.

The Loop Hike descent
Covered the four miles in 1:40 (25 mins/mile).

Who would’ve thought there’d be a red light on Going to The Sun Road? Hoping to make a 2pm Vacation Rental Home on Lake McDonald.

The Loop Hike descent
The Smoke had cleared in the couple hours it took us to catch the shuttle.

Quite possibly the last time ever staying in Granite Park Chalet.

Could be the final visit to Glacier National Park.

Could be the last time Howard and i see each other.

Not to be morbid, just to be realistic.

And to be inspired by the present moment.

It works for me, and has for the past eight years.

However, with each passing year, my present moments keep getting better.

This view changes as the light and clouds change. Never gets old or boring.

i can see the smoke coming from the Sprauge fire, because i know what i’m looking for. otherwise, you’d never notice.

Every room has a lock but no keys. Only locks from inside.

Granite Park Chalet
Seven never had so much significance as it did last night.

Our original reservation was for Sperry Chalet, which burned to the ground a few days ago.

A few weeks ago, the trails to Sperry closed due to the Sprauge fire. Glacier National Park consequently closed Sperry for the season.

i booked the St Mary Lodge immediately to replace Sperry.

The next day, on a “no-hope” whim, i went to Granite Park Chalet’s website.

One opening.

A miracle.

Rock for two, near the window please.

Nearly all the 75 hikers there were enjoying lunch, like us.

Every seat was a rock. And every rock had a spectacular view.

We didn’t want to leave.

Two hours wasn’t nearly enough.

Our departure was driven by a boat shuttle schedule.

i could have been killed

Sprauge fire 2017
Woke up to this a few hours ago – inconvenient but not life-threatening. And then driving to the airport, a breathtaking near-accident.

i could have been killed a few hours ago.

It’s dark at 6:35AM.

Speed limit is 70.

In the slow lane, doing 68, nearing the airport.

Not many cars on the road.

Traffic slows and i’m down to about 50mph.

A move to the left to pick the faster of the slowed traffic…

And my blind spot suddenly reveals a really slow car immediately in front of me and the car i’m passing on the right is beside me.

All i could do was hold my breath, instantly move back into the right lane, even though the car on the right was too close.

Without this move, i would have crashed into the car directly in front of me.

But with the move, i thought i’d surely scrap both sides of my car because the opening was too narrow.

There was no time to think, only time to split-second move to the right.

i swear it was a God-incidence.

Not a scratch.

First, and best case scenario, i thought of the vehicle damage (without personal injury) and missing the trip (police reports, etc) to Glacier until tomorrow, after all the intentionality to get there and be the first in line at the rental car counter.

Next, i thought about how potentially deadly my front end collision could have been.

i almost fainted.
