Secret hack to improve your work

The secret hack to improving your work?

The way to get better is to get better at getting better.

Never considered myself a storyteller. In fact i considered myself the opposite, a poor storyteller. Poor storytellers are best when they are silent.

One day, with Leslie Bays-Baker in a private, nine-executive multi-day engagement, i told the closing story and tied the story’s point to the thesis statement for the class’s entire four days.

After the group graduated and left the classroom on day four, Leslie shared, “I loved your personal story and how you connected it back to the content and the audience.”

Leslie’s feedback changed the course of my speaking career because for the first time, it felt as if i was a purposeful storyteller.

Have never looked backed from that defining moment.

Blogging every morning for 11 years was birthed out of the desire to become a better storyteller, and perhaps some day to become a master storyteller.

Why?

To dream, create, and inspire.

Do not choke

Imagine what a 30-year Disney Operations insider knows about creativity and innovation. Priceless? Depends what you need to fix and improve.

World-class is highly desirable.

Of course, it is also expensive.

Investing time, money, and resources.

(It’s also expensive in lost opportunity costs, turnover, cultural weakness, ineffective leadership).

Not many naturally see world-class cultural architecture as an investment.

Some do.

Guess who they are.

The crazy ones. The misfits. The outliers. The ones who know there is no other choice.

So please do not choke when i give you the quote.

Setbacks should be expected

Embrace personal struggles and opportunities, it’s how we learn and grow.

Setbacks should be expected.

Like the recent meeting about a giant business move forward.

Two days ago, the meeting was cancelled hours before it was to start.

Why this is stressful is because the project is already painfully behind.

The cancelled meeting makes it worse.

Like the college freshman, being able to confront the bad things – my fear and doubt – is significant personal growth.

We can become overconfident to the point of a blind spot.

What?

Our success rate with confidence, and plowing through fear and doubt, may just have a cancerous growth we can’t detect until it can not be ignored.

All of a sudden, we are faced with a business challenge that shouldn’t exist and now it’s so big that it drags the rest of the business down.

Could they disappear from the internet?

Mr Incredible…seems like a perfect reference for a college that changes lives.

Impossible is the only thing that truly stirs human souls.

The thought of lifting yourself (and others) to a better situation or reality is inspiring.

Curing the incurable.

Leading the un-leadable.

Transforming an addiction into a lifetime recovery.

Eliminating poverty.

Eliminating injustice.

And on and on.
