Hire for technical skills or for relationship skills?

Airplane wind seat
The boy exclaimed as we became airborne, “Goodbye Florida. See you soon Florida.”

Leadership is remarkably easy and insanely challenging.

It really depends on your audience, and what their motives are and how interactions with you help or hinder their motives.

The little boy and his Mom were incredibly grateful that i traded seats so the boy could see out the window. i made their day with a simple act of kindness.

Conversely, a key contract employee i’m working with thinks i’m disorganized and slow. And interestingly enough, i think he could be milking the system.

It’s eating away at us. i’ve began the resolution a week ago by calling a face-to-face meeting and airing (awkwardly) my concerns. Still waiting for deliverables, yet remaining hopeful.

In my wildest dreams, i pray we both couldn’t be farther from the truth.

On April Fool’s Day 2009, jeff noel began writing five daily, differently-themed blogs (on five different sites). It was to be a 100-day self-imposed “writer’s bootcamp”, in preparation for writing his first book. He hasn’t missed a single day since.

Feel free to stop reading this if your career is going great

Magic Kingdom Barber Shop
In the classroom, i always talk about the balance between pixie dust and reality. Reality is quite harsh sometimes.

David Wong’s 2012 manifesto: 6 Harsh Truths That Will Make You A Better Person is filled with profanity, humor, guilt, and insight. Warning, the article is full of profanity. If profanity offends you or if rampant profanity will paralyze you from being open to the deeper message behind the post, i recommend you don’t click through. And the first paragraph (below) is the only one without profanity. One final thing, there’s a video in #3 that i couldn’t watch because i found it disgusting…i highly recommend skipping it. (So disgusting that i almost canceled this post. And that’s part of the message – we are not going to like everything the world puts before us – yet some of life’s most important messages are only found there.)

PS. Compared to the video (your clue before you click on it is the guy in a speedo and a blue cape), i saw a news story last night about a 15-year old who was wrongly imprisoned for murder. Weeks after his sentencing, the real killer confessed to the five murders. Unfortunately, the young man spent nine years imprisoned before finally being set free. That story makes me sick to my stomach and makes the obnoxious video seem irrelevant.

Here’s the first paragraph:

Feel free to stop reading this if your career is going great, you’re thrilled with your life, and you’re happy with your relationships. Enjoy the rest of your day, friend, this article is not for you. You’re doing a great job, we’re all proud of you. So you don’t feel like you wasted your click, here’s a picture of Lenny Kravitz wearing a gigantic scarf.

We are faced with two blatantly obvious choices

Best Disney Keynote Speakers
Only in leaving can we discover the Magic we say we believe in. Note: Disney Retiree ID.

If we really believe we are worth more than we are being paid, and it’s been this way for a long, long time, we are faced with two blatantly obvious choices.

Stay, and wallow in our misery.

Leave, and prove it.

An entrepreneur’s three biggest competitors

Apple Watch reminder app
During yesterday’s run, an epiphany. Created a reminder using Siri.

An entrepreneur’s three biggest competitors:

  1. Curators
  2. Copycats
  3. Wannabes

Curators don’t have their own platform, but they are good at telling us what others have done. The downside is they have no context for the full story – they were never on the inside, never on the front line, never behind the scenes, never privy to the secret reality that outsiders will never know. Nothing is ever as it seems.

Copycats are good at studying and mimicking. They appeal to those easily convinced.

Wannabes are former employees who have gone out on their own because they couldn’t stand the glass ceiling. They are not prepared enough (and never will be) to match the world class karma of their former employer.

And then there are the artists, who operate as a category of one. These folks bring something unique, refreshing, compelling, and inspiring.
