Welcome packet.

Walt Disney’s apartment is small, about 500 square feet.

Two pull-out sofa beds.

One bathroom with shower.

A small kitchen pantry, no sink, but appliances and cabinets.

Several windows and low ceiling.

Above the Disneyland Fire House.

Timeless and timely

The past year and the present year.

My friend and Disney legend Marty Skylar told me that Walt had one foot in the past and one foot in the present.

Marty went on to tell me that Walt used the nostalgia and emotional connection of the past as an anchor for his pitch for a crazy idea for the future.

We fondly call this timeless and timely.

Same for us.

We don’t want to be the people who denounced the original automobile concept in favor of a faster horse.

Listen to Walt Disney’s words about technology

There’s a (not too) “hidden” Walt in the background.

Listen to Walt Disney’s words about technology…

Listening to Walt, the more things change, the more they stay the same.

Technology has always existed.

What changes is our understanding of what customer’s need and want from our Company and our Company’s collective ability to find any means (often through, but not limited to, technology) to exceed the expectations.

Your actions should not come as a surprise

Walt Disney picking up trash
People go nuts when they see a photo like this. Why? Not sure. What stops any of us from picking up trash all the time? Walt’s actions shouldn’t surprise us.

Your actions should not come as a surprise.

When a CEO “gets caught picking up trash”, a buzz is created.

Why?

Because she’s setting such a great example, right?

Here’s my point (again), why would this ever become newsworthy? Isn’t the CEO always picking up trash? In my world, this should never astonish and inspire people.

Why?

Because everyone should be picking up trash all the time.

Brief moments of thinking brilliantly

DFW airport
DFW airport, two days ago. What an insane accolade. Congrats DFW.
DFW airport
DFW airport. Wow, Wow, 475 out of 500 top companies use Webex. Congrats Webex.
DFW airport
DFW airport. Deloitte is the largest “business services” firm in the world.

On a mentoring phone call, yesterday walking back from the gym, a moment of insight.

Similar to how Roy Disney saw profit as the goal and Walt saw profit as the reward, i told the mentee to use that contrast in his Disney Leadership application.

Guessing close to 100% of the applicants apply with a job as the goal. What if Tim applied with a job as the reward?

He liked it. i liked it.

That wordsmithing had never happened prior to yesterday, March 15, 2019.
